Sometimes, your devices might need to be inspected or repaired. That’s the case with just about any modern electronic device. Your hearing aids are essentially miniature computers, and experience the same wear and tear that any other electronic would.
The difference, however, is that hearing aids are pieces of technology that you wear, so they’re more susceptible to things like sweat, dirt, earwax, and other debris. With that in mind, it’s no wonder that they’ll need to be regularly examined and cleaned by our professionals so that they’re always working their best for you.

Common reasons for repairing your hearing aids

Is your device making a whistling noise? Does it feel like your hearing aids have been adjusted and you’re just not hearing things the way you should? Have the devices themselves gotten damaged through some mishap? Are the custom components of your devices just not fitting comfortably? Call us! We’ll schedule time with you to better understand what’s happening with your technology. In many cases, we can take care of the repairs right here in the practice. Other repairs will require us to send your devices back to the manufacturer, where their technology experts will assess your hearing aids and repair them.

Common ways to troubleshoot your hearing aids

We’re always happy to help our patients with their devices, but there are a few important things to look for first when you’re worried about malfunctioning technology:

Is the device turned on?

We know, we know — this one seems obvious. However, things can happen, and devices can get accidentally turned off. Sometimes what seems like a big problem is really very simple! Similarly, sometimes your healing aids’ volume control can get accidentally turned all the way down. Check to make sure you haven’t accidentally muted your aids.

Are your batteries working/Are your devices charged?

Every once in a while, you might come across a battery that is a dud, causing your devices to seemingly malfunction. If you can, try a fresh battery to see if that does the trick. Or, if you’re someone who wears rechargeable hearing aids, give them some time on your charging dock to see if that works.

Is the tubing cracked?

If you wear Behind-the-Ear technology, then you’re familiar with the small plastic tubing that connects your hearing aid to your dome or custom mold. Exposure to heat, light, moisture, and your body’s natural oils can cause these tubes to dry out and crack over time, resulting in an aid that can’t perform at its best. In these instances, contact us and we’ll get you in right away to change out your devices’ tubing and get you back to hearing the world the way you deserve to.

More ways to take care of your hearing aids at home

Hearing aids should be regularly cleaned at home and professionally cleaned by us in the practice at least twice a year.

During your hearing aid fitting, we’ll give you a hearing aid cleaning kit, and show you how to properly clean your devices. This kit will include tools like small brushes and microfiber cloths that are designed to remove wax buildup from your aids, as well as wipe off any debris that might get stuck to your devices.

At your twice-annual hearing aid cleanings, we’ll examine your devices, professionally clean them, and, if necessary, change out the tubing so that your devices are fresh, clean, and ready to support you in whatever hearing situation you find yourself in.

Lastly, it’s important to keep your hearing aids dry. We offer hearing aid dehumidifiers as an optional accessory to our patients. It’s the perfect way to keep your hearing aids clean and performing optimally, and you can use this device while you’re sleeping, so your hearing never gets disrupted!
